A Day in the Life of Elliott

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

7:00 – 8:00am Wake up. The timing on this is largely based on how loud Charlotte is in the morning and how full my diaper gets. Also, if I’ve smushed myself into the corner of the bassinet, I’ll get cranky when I start wakening up. After getting my clothes changed it’s time for breakfast! I’d probably eat 8 or more ounces, but since I’ll spit up anything over 6, it’s 6 ounces.

9:30 – 10:30am I’m so hungry! I’ve spent the last couple of hours hanging out in my swing or with some tummy time or (god forbid) in my car seat while mom runs errands. When I start fussing again and it’s clear that cuddles and a dry diaper are not going to cut it, it’s time to eat again. Depending on how long it’s been since breakfast, this could be anywhere from 2-6 ounces. Usually mom gives me 4 and I eat almost all of it. (more…)

One Week Later: The Positives

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

To combat the annoying Baby Blues, instead of blogging everything that’s happened this week (and with what time, really), I’m going to focus on the positive things. (more…)

Baby Elliott: The Last Pre-Partum Post

I’m being induced tonight.

I’m being induced tonight.

I’m being induced to– Nope. No matter how many times I see/say/think it. It still doesn’t feel real. (more…)

Week 36: Checkup Drama and More

Monday, May 17th, 2010

It’s the beginning of the end, now. I woke up last Monday morning to find Elliott’s feet firmly planted under my ribs. The only reason he could pull that off was because he’d dropped into his pre-launch position. This is both a good and bad thing. (more…)

Week 35: “Are You Ready Yet?”

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I am not squeamish. I do not shy away from stories about pregnancies/labor where things have gone horribly wrong just because i’m pregnant and it might “jinx” something. i may jokingly cover my belly when someone talks about colic or other new-baby drama, but i don’t really think they’re giving Elliott any ideas. you can pretty much talk about any aspect of pregnancy/parenthood around me and i’m cool with it.

what i’m not cool with is any version of the following question/comment: (more…)

Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails

Friday, April 30th, 2010

This past weekend, a few of my mom’s friends threw a shower/celebration for Elliott. I know what you may be thinking: A shower? For a second baby? It happens, especially if Baby 2 is a different gender than Baby 1. It’s basically an excuse for a group of women to get together and drink sangria and pina coladas and give Elliott the things they would have bought for him anyway. The crowd was limited to friends and family who would enjoy the occasion and for whom I wouldn’t blink an eye about attending a “second baby shower” for, either.

It was pretty fun as far as showers go. (more…)

Current Mantra: WWSMD?

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I’m running into a new problem as I get deeper into my third trimester: I’m the pregnant mother of a toddler.

I know, duh, right? Well, amid all the focus on being a healthy baby carrier, prep for Elliott’s debut, and occasional freak outs about being a mother of two, being a pregnant mom gets lost in the shuffle. Even when it’s an issue (surprise! you can’t hold your daughter on your lap and put on her shoes anymore!), it’s usually something with an obvious solution. (more…)

How Am I? I’m Pregnant

Monday, April 5th, 2010

People keep asking me how I’m feeling (the nerve!) and until recently, I’ve been struggling with how to answer. Since Easter Sunday was an opportunity for several family members who don’t often see me to check in on my pregnancy, I got lots of practice trying out my favorite answer.

Week 26: Checkup++

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Week 26 was a big one for both Elliott and me. Our monthly doctor’s visit included not only routine testing and “howre you doing?” chat with the doc, but a sonogram and a standard 1 hour glucose tolerance test. How’d we do? Elliott passed with flying colors. Me? Not so much.

Where the Heck Did My Second Trimester Go?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Pregnancy math is a weird thing. I always have “trouble” with date math to begin with since something that is “a week from today” can be considered both 7 and 8 days away (or even 6 if you want to count just the days between today and a week from today). Pregnancy terms make it worse. “Everyone” knows you’re pregnant for 9 months, even it’s really 40 weeks. But the first two weeks don’t count because you’re not pregnant, and the next two hardly count because you’re not late yet, so sometimes you can be almost two “months” into being pregnant before you realize that you are. Which means that 20 weeks, while mathematically the half-way point, doesn’t hardly feel like it and makes the second “half” seem to take extra, extra long.

And let’s talk about that “week” thing, shall we? People always ask how many weeks along you are. It’s tough to answer. I get emails from various sites on a near-daily basis giving me updates on how I might be feeling, what fun new complications being pregnant may have recently caused, how the baby’s growing, and of course, how I should invest thousands of dollars in cord blood banking and start stocking up on diapers right away. They all have a different idea about what week I’m in, even though i’ve given them all the same due date. How do you define when a week starts? I know that on Friday, I will be at 26 weeks, meaning that I’ve completed 26 full weeks of being pregnant. Today, however, most everyone agrees that I’m “in my 26th week”, even though I’m really “at” 25weeks and 5 days. Some sites started me on “week 26″ emails as early as last Saturday (25w1d). Some seem to wait until you’re in the middle of the week (as if the 26th week extends from 25w4d to 26w3d.

Is any of it the end of the world? Of course not. So why am I ranting about this?
