A Day in the Life of Elliott

7:00 – 8:00am Wake up. The timing on this is largely based on how loud Charlotte is in the morning and how full my diaper gets. Also, if I’ve smushed myself into the corner of the bassinet, I’ll get cranky when I start wakening up. After getting my clothes changed it’s time for breakfast! I’d probably eat 8 or more ounces, but since I’ll spit up anything over 6, it’s 6 ounces.

9:30 – 10:30am I’m so hungry! I’ve spent the last couple of hours hanging out in my swing or with some tummy time or (god forbid) in my car seat while mom runs errands. When I start fussing again and it’s clear that cuddles and a dry diaper are not going to cut it, it’s time to eat again. Depending on how long it’s been since breakfast, this could be anywhere from 2-6 ounces. Usually mom gives me 4 and I eat almost all of it.

10:30am – 2pm I’m so sleepy! Sure, I may fuss a moment or two when she puts me down in the crib, but I could really use a nap now. How will I prove it to you? If you don’t bother me, I’ll sleep till 2pm.

(alternately) 12:30pm – 4pm Sometimes, for whatever reason (usually someone deciding their needs are more important than my nap), I don’t fall asleep right away. In that case, I’ll take another 4-6 ounces before my nap begins.

3pm or so Whenever I wake up from my nap I’m going to be hungry. I’ll also need a wardrobe change (and a sheet change) because no diaper can contain a boy who sleeps on his belly for that long. Depending on how long that nap was (sometimes that 10am nap lasts until 4), mom might risk giving me 8 ounces, but it will probably just be 6 again.

Here’s where things get tricky.

If i’m having a tired day, or my nap was cut short: I’ll probably drop back off to sleep within about 30 minutes of being awake and will sleep for another hour or so. This is ideal. I’ll wake around 5:30 or so, eat again (4-6 ounces), and be ready for my last meal of the day sometime around 8pm.

If I wake up too late or my naps are thwarted by scheduling conflicts: It’s not that big of a deal, but some days I end up skipping a meal because I eat my last one around 6:30 or so and drop off around 7:30.

Either way, I’m down for the night sometime between 7:30 and 8:30pm. Rarely do I wake for a midnight snack, and even rarer do I not go right back to sleep after being fed and changed.

This will likely all change in the coming weeks. Partially because babies are always in flux, even happy contented ones like me. Partially because I’m overstaying my welcome in the bassinet at night and changing my nighttime surroundings is bound to complicate. Especially with my zany sister on the other side of a wall.

If only we slept as much, I’m certain we’d all be happier people.
